This section establishes the professional and legislative context for inclusive dance education in Australia. Participants will explore current prevalence data for autism, the obligations of dance studios under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992, and the evidence-informed language frameworks that underpin respectful, inclusive practice. A strong foundation in this content supports confident, consistent communication with students, families, and colleagues.
This section translates clinical knowledge into practical recognition skills. Participants will develop the ability to identify and interpret a range of presentations commonly observed in the dance studio setting including stimming, meltdowns, dysregulation, masking, Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria, the PDA profile, and co-occurring ADHD. Accurate recognition is the foundation of an appropriate, timely, and supportive response.
This section equips participants with a substantive toolkit of classroom strategies drawn from applied behaviour analysis, sensory integration frameworks, and inclusive education best practice. Across ten focused lessons, participants will develop skills in adapted communication, feedback delivery, sensory environment management, behaviour analysis, routine and transition support, calming intervention, and strategies specific to the PDA profile. Content is directly applicable to the dance studio context.
This section addresses the operational and relational dimensions of inclusive practice at the studio level. Participants will examine enrolment and intake processes, effective communication frameworks for working with families of autistic students, peer education within the class environment, appropriate expectation-setting, and planning for high-sensory events such as concerts and performances. This section is particularly relevant for studio owners and directors responsible for embedding inclusive practice across their organisation.
